PASC Aerodrome Upgrade
Scope
Durack Civil is engaged by Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council to upgrade the Pormpuraaw Aerodrome, addressing significant pavement distress that impacts vital access for emergency services, freight, and the local community. To minimise disruption to flights during construction, our team constructed a temporary airstrip at a nearby site to maintain continuous access for aircraft and essential services. The scope of works includes clearing, demolition, site preparation, ripping and milling of the existing seal, and construction of a cement-treated base course. This will be followed by the application of a two-coat sprayed bitumen seal with a final sand emulsion seal, alongside the installation of drainage structures and apron lighting extensions. Environmental controls, quality testing, and site reinstatement will also be carried out. A key challenge is the remediation of swampy, boggy subgrade materials, requiring careful excavation and replacement to ensure long-term pavement performance and prevent costly delays from moisture ingress and ground instability.
