Scope

Durack Civil was engaged by Burke Shire Council to deliver the Burketown Airport Reconstruction and Remediation Works, a critical infrastructure upgrade designed to enhance air transport safety, resilience, and long-term operational capacity in the region. The project involves an upgrade of Airport Road to support future traffic demands, ensuring continued connectivity for residents, emergency services, and tourism.

The scope of works includes complete runway rehabilitation incorporating subgrade lime stabilisation, pavement reconstruction, sealing, linemarking, and installation of new airfield lighting and stormwater drainage infrastructure. Additional works include remediation of the Albert River embankment and delivery of Stage 2 of the Airport Road upgrade. A temporary runway is being constructed to maintain airport operations throughout delivery, with all works undertaken in accordance with CASA standards. Durack Civil is coordinating specialist subcontractors and local suppliers, supported by partnerships with the Aboriginal Land Corporation to deliver accommodation, logistics, and workforce engagement.

Delivered in a remote and logistically challenging environment, the project requires detailed planning for material supply, transport, and workforce management. Continuous airport operations add complexity to staging and sequencing, requiring regulatory approvals for temporary facilities. Seasonal weather and flooding risks necessitate flexible programming and contingency planning, while the sensitive environmental and cultural setting requires ongoing engagement with Traditional Owners and stakeholders. Through proactive management and collaboration, Durack Civil is delivering a resilient, high-quality outcome that will support the Burketown community for years to come.
