Aurukun DRFA Restoration Works – Package 1
Scope
Durack Civil has been engaged by Aurukun Shire Council to deliver the ASC 2024 DRFA Restoration Works – Package 1 under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) program. The project involves restoration of critical road infrastructure damaged by flood and cyclone events, reinstating safe and reliable access across key community routes including Aurukun Access Road, Amban Road, Back Beach Road (Oban Road), and various township streets. Delivered within a remote Cape York environment, the works are staged based on road priority to support community connectivity, freight movement, and long-term asset resilience.
The scope of works comprises a broad range of pavement rehabilitation and restoration treatments, including medium and heavy formation grading, gravel re-sheeting with imported materials, in-situ stabilisation, reconstruction of unbound granular pavements, shoulder grading, pothole and pavement patching, and two-coat bitumen sealing. Additional works include drainage improvements such as table drain reshaping and desilting, replacement of headwalls and road furniture, debris removal, bulk earthworks, gravel sourcing and stockpiling, haulage management, erosion and sediment controls, traffic management, testing and quality assurance, and rehabilitation of extraction areas.
Delivered across a remote and dispersed road network, the project presents significant logistical and environmental challenges, including extended supply chains, material sourcing constraints, and strict hold-point approvals for gravel extraction and testing. Works are highly weather-dependent, with rainfall impacting access, formation stability, and programme continuity. Additional complexities include maintaining public safety on live roads, compliance with cultural heritage requirements, environmental controls, and meeting DRFA delivery timeframes. Through disciplined planning and coordination, Durack Civil is delivering a resilient outcome that supports long-term infrastructure performance for the Aurukun community.
